Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast a reading of 96.5. “Consumer sentiment inched upward in early April mainly due to more favorable views of current economic conditions,” the survey’s chief economist Richard Curtin said in a statement. Consumers’ outlook on the economy improved following Republican Donald Trump’s presidential win in November. Some consumers have hoped for more jobs and higher income due to tax cuts, infrastructure spending and looser regulations that Trump pledged during his campaign.
