Why Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX) stock is under pressure

Non-GAAP net income grew 113% compared to the fourth quarter of 2017 majorly due to the strong growth in total CF product revenues. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities as of December 31, 2018 were approximately $3.2 billion, an increase of approximately $1.1 billion compared to $2.1 billion as of December 31, 2017.

VRTX in the fourth quarter of FY 18 has reported the adjusted earnings per share of $1.30. The company had reported the adjusted revenue growth of 33.5 percent to $870.11 million in the fourth quarter of FY 18. Total CF net product revenues grew 40% compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, primarily due to the rapid uptake of SYMDEKO in the U.S.

Moreover, in CF, the company expects to obtain the Phase 3 data for the VX-445 triple combination this quarter and is on track to submit a new drug application for a triple combination regimen no later than midyear. The company also expects to see more patients initiating treatment with the medicines throughout 2019. As a result of global label expansions and from key reimbursement agreements reaching 2018, which will drive further revenue growth this year. In the non-CF pipeline, data expected in the first half of 2019 from the Phase 2b dose ranging study of VX-150 will inform the plans for potential Phase 3 development in pain.

In the AAT program, VRTX is advancing a portfolio of small molecule correctors, including the first molecule and entered Phase 1 development in late 2018 and a second that is expected to enter clinical development this year. And in sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia, the company have now initiated enrollment of both of the Phase 1/2 studies of the gene editing treatment of CTX001.

Meanwhile, VRTX has recently announced positive Phase 2 results for VX-150 showing a significant reduction of pain in people with small fiber neuropathy.

Additionally, Vertex and its partner CRISPR Therapeutics are developing the autologous gene-edited hematopoietic stem cell therapy CTX001 for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia. On January 4, 2019, Vertex and CRISPR Therapeutics announced that the FDA granted Fast Track Designation for CTX001 for the treatment of sickle cell disease. Phase 1/2 trials in sickle cell disease and beta-thalassemia are currently underway.
