Thailand SEC to Block Unauthorized Crypto Platforms

In a bid to enhance security and combat online crime, Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced plans to block unauthorized access to cryptocurrency platforms. The move comes as part of a coordinated effort by Thailand SEC with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) and other relevant agencies.

Pornanong Busaratrakul, Secretary-General of the SEC, revealed that the decision was made during a meeting on April 19. The meeting was organized by the Technology Crime Prevention and Suppression Committee. The SEC will provide information on unauthorized digital asset service providers to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, which will then initiate legal proceedings to block access to these platforms.

The primary objective behind this initiative is to bolster law enforcement efforts and prevent criminals from exploiting digital asset platforms for illicit activities. Mrs. Pornanong emphasized the importance of safeguarding users and giving them time to manage their accounts before access is restricted.

Thailand’s SEC has previously taken legal action against unauthorized digital asset operators, including high-profile cases involving Binance and Bybit crypto exchanges. By urging users to withdraw their assets from unauthorized platforms, the SEC aims to mitigate potential risks associated with fraud and money laundering.

Thailand’s Ongoing Efforts to Secure Crypto Environment and Protect Investors

This move aligns with Thailand’s efforts to foster a secure and regulated crypto environment while cracking down on illicit activities. Earlier this year, Thailand extended exemptions on value-added tax for crypto trading gains and allowed local institutions to invest in U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds.

Investors and the public are advised to exercise caution when dealing with unauthorized digital asset operators, as they do not receive legal protection and are vulnerable to fraud. The SEC encourages individuals to verify the legitimacy of crypto platforms by consulting its official website or using the “SEC Check First” application. Thailand’s proactive measures underscore the importance of regulatory oversight in safeguarding the integrity of the crypto market and protecting investors from potential risks.
